A circular weight
Unlike other kinds of anger, frustration isn't often transformative or useful, it doesn't offer release. Instead it's destructive. It goes round and round and round in your head, a kind of powerlessness. There's a road sign I drive past sometimes which says in capital letters FRUSTRATION CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS. All those helping hands and hard work and trust and still it depletes. Some problems can’t be fixed. We spoke about all this at an offpage gathering and I'm grateful. Shortly afterwards I made this, something solid and satisfying felt good.
A circular weight was exhibited as part of white cubes, a specially curated exhibition brought together by the makers of offpage, Glasgow's peer-led development programme for writers and artists interested in visual poetry and the poetic visual. The wonderful creative partners behind off-page, Julie and Chris, worked with their 2023/24 cohorts to produce a pop-up version of their annual anthology-exhibition. Framed and contained by one of the world's most iconic pieces of display furniture, the show re-imagined the traditional gallery format of the 'white cube' in miniature, providing a playful and interactive introduction to a range of different ideas and forms of visual poetic practice.
