About me
I am a Freelance visual artist based in South Queensferry, primarily working with analogue photography. I am interested in the relationship between pictures, words, memory and imagination, and always people with stories. I believe wholeheartedly in the therapeutic nature of making and I’m passionate about building meaningful communities and spaces for dialogue both on and offline. I am an advocate for greater transparency within the creative industries and try where possible to minimise ‘grey areas’ in common understanding, especially around finance and hierarchies. I am a Founding Co-Director of AGITATE (est. 2022) and also work with a number of clients specialising in digital communications.
I am currently working on FRONDS, a period of research and development investigating three species of palm tree, thanks to support from Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for Individuals. Please feel free to get in touch. The internet was made for connecting!
Statement of Ethics (6.26)
Intent
My intent as an artist is led by curiosity and a desire to learn, whether this be about myself and my own experience, or the experiences of others (people, places, things). I will consistently evaluate whether I am an appropriate person to tell a story, and the role of my voice as artist as something with a positive and empowering impact. I will work to represent others and others’ experiences in a respectful, honest, and sensitive way.
I will regularly interrogate my motivation for making photographs, and my ability to listen and evaluate feedback from a variety of critical sources. I will actively seek criticism from a variety of sources in order to inform my approach.
Photographing people, I will make clear my intentions for the work and its potential publication, share the images with participants as soon as I am able, and do everything possible to ensure the experience is comfortable and collaborative. I acknowledge that circumstances change, and those photographed reserve the right to revoke their consent for the images to be shared publicly at any time (with appropriate notice given for this to be actioned).
Responsibility
I recognise that images can have real impact, and acknowledge a responsibility of care to everyone I photograph that lasts as long as the images do. I endeavour to choose creative collaborators based on shared ethics and attitudes whilst respecting individual nuance, and commit to supporting and celebrating my collaborators wherever possible.
I have a responsibility to consider the environment when making work as in all elements of life and will consider low-impact options wherever possible. This includes using second-hand materials, tools, and hardware where appropriate, minimising waste, and actively seeking ways to develop new low-toxicity methodologies and sharing resources where possible.
Accountability
When I make mistakes, I endeavour to respond proactively and with sensitivity. I understand codes of ethics vary from person to person, that disagreements are healthy if heard, and that this is an ongoing promise which may change as I do.
